Match report – Sars Octet in Blitz Battle.
An early start and change of clocks didn't catch anyone out on Sunday morning for our first U12 outing of the season. All expected players emerged into the sunshine to take on Round Towers and Athy kitted out in brand new jerseys courtesy of glenveagh.
First up were Round Towers who appeared to have brought several hundred players with them! Mia R started in goal with a back line partnership of Aoibhinn and Orla who came under immediate pressure and had some valiant defending to do. Orla was not letting anything or anyone past her and Aoibhinn ably clearing her lines with some fine ground Hurling. The midfield of Hannah, Beth and Emily were defending resolutely too, with some great hooks and blocks going in. Mia B and Sarah were monitoring the situation from the forward lines with only occasional opportunities coming their way. Sheer numbers and depth of the squad meant that Towers were able to change their entire team at half time. But our girls had to bravely battle on with no chance of rest on the sidelines! Speaking of the sideline Linda's in depth knowledge of the Go Games rule book came in handy to help the ref through the game. There were some super blocking and some fine strikes from the hand particularly from Hannah and Beth which is essential at this level and something we will continue to work on in training.
The second match V Athy was a more even affair with our girls limiting them to a handful of scores. We didn’t trouble the scoreboard too much today ourselves but for the first day out that is not a concern for anyone. Due to the multi talented nature of the under 12 panel many girls had other commitments with rugby, athletics, etc but hopefully we will make a return over the coming weeks. A well deserved ice cream was had by all and special thanks to all the Mammies who were still on taxi duty that morning.
Well done to all the girls super battling all around.
