Match Report - U12 Blitz in Broadford - “Super 9 return undefeated!” - While many of the U12 squad are cross-country enthusiasts, on Sunday it was the turn of the parents to make a cross-county trek to far-flung Broadford! The early start, cold weather and long drive was not appetising for anyone, and the coaches would like to sincerely thank all the parents for their fortitude today. Special guest appearances from Eabha O’Connor, Aoibhinn Carty and Ava Swan (who was double booked!) really saved the day!
The opponents today were Rathcoffey in the 1st game and Broadford in the 2nd. The chilly wind didn’t affect the girls as they flew into the lead and ended up scoring 5 goals and 2 fine points while keeping Rathcoffey scoreless. The 2nd game was a much tighter affair, but still the Sars girls won the day with 2 fine points counting for more than Broadfords 1 goal at this age. The fine individual displays started with Eabha O’Connor in goals. Her long puckouts and some super saves under pressure were great to see. Aoibhinn R playing in the backs played some determined ground hurling and sniffed out any chances. Aoibhinn Cartys confidence in going past people relieved pressure and turned defence into attack over and over, despite the close attention of her marker. Rosin showed her skills in picking the ball when she had time and getting it away under pressure and even had a super last second hook that prevented a certain goal. Our backline today showcased the full range of defensive skills.
Reiltin ran the show in midfield along with the midfield enforcer Mia R. Reiltin had some sideline cuts that Joe Canning would have been proud of as well as a stand out point of the day when she won possession, took her four steps and slotted over the back spot for a fine individual point. Mia Roche threw down the marker early on that nothing or nobody would get by her without a fight. The teams disrupter-in-chief made several brave blocks and refused to leave the field of play despite a painful whack to the knee, then a slithor to the midrif, then a smack to the paw!
Ava Swan bagged herself a goal or 2 and was dangerous throughout. Combining with Leah who had the defences shaking in their boots all morning. Both combined for a lovely one-two handpass manouver which was finished off to the net by Ava. Leah was a goal-machine today grabbing a couple through persistence and stubbornness to not let the goal opportunity pass her by. Orla B had some super pick-and-strikes today and got herself a well-taken goal against Rathcoffey. Some great possession and hand passing link up play provided chances for her team mates.
A couple of debatable frees went unnoticed by the match officials but didn't escape the eagle eyed Sars supporters who had made the pilgrimage to Broadfoard. But alas, prayers were not answered and although the whistle was silent, the vocal support ratcheted up a notch for the last few minutes of the 2nd game. But, Sarsfields Girls would not be defeated today. The post-match sausage rolls warmed the hands and were well-earned once more! Well done to all. 😀👏🏻
