*MATCH REPORT (Milltown Sarsfields vs Maynooth, 08/05/22)*
On the best day of the year, our U13 hurlers took on a Maynooth team that had been flying in the league. We were expecting a tough test and so it proved -Maynooth flew out of the blocks and had 2-3 scored inside 10 minutes and we were struggling across the pitch to get a hold of the ball. After a nervous start, Donal Larkin found his range with the puck outs and hit Myles D’arcy with a beauty. Myles fed Fionn Clandillon who, after a trade-mark solo run, rifled over the bar. This settled the nerves and 2 quickfire goals from Daniel Gorey and Luca O’Brien had us right back in the game. At this stage, our half back line got to grips with Maynooth’s dangerous forwards and Luca constantly emerged with ball, feeding Ronan Lacey and Gary Malone on the right flank. Daniel continued his high temp game and crashed home two more goals. Myles added a few frees, leaving us up by four points at the interval.
The second half was a cagier affair but again Maynooth had a further purple patch, but some great last ditch defending by Dylan Buckley and Ryan Crawford kept the lads in it. Fresh legs in the shape of Kyle Carter, Rory Woods and Patrick Shannon added impetus and two nerveless frees in the final minutes completed an unlikely draw.
There are bigger days ahead of this team but the fight and composure showed on the day was a credit to all, leaving us still in the hunt for league honours.
