Match Report:
While conditions, if you were being kind, were damp, there was nothing damp about the enthusiasm of the Sarsfields U8 girls on Sunday morning in their blitz vs Round Towers of Kildare and Athy.
First up for the girls in Green was Round Towers. If Sarsfields had a Unit, then Round Towers came with a whole division and their subs quickly formed a second team to play Athy.
As for the match, a line up of Grace, Lily, Isabella, Amira, Emily, Tosha and Mia started the game and quickly got into the action.
The first half was a big rearguard action from the Sash, with Emily and Amira working hard to stem the tide in midfield and Lily and Isabella repelling wave after wave of attack from a strong and talented Round Towers side. Grace in goals made some fantastic saves before showing her ability out the field too.
Mia and Tosha, up inbthe forwards, were starved of possession in the first half but worked hard with the ball they got. Seona came in and created great impetus in midfield in the second half, driving her teammates forward and keeping the ball moving.
A talented Round Towers side picked off a few scores against the Sash but huge credit to the Girls who worked hard to keep them out and, towards the end, to try and grab a score of their own against a dogged Round Towers defence. The Kildare Town side were pleased to come away with the victory.
After a quick turnaround, while Round Towers A took on Round Towers B, Sash took on Athy as conditions worsened. Hard to know whether hurls or paddles would have served the teams better given the downpours experienced.
Straight from the off, in the middle of the park, Seona, Mia, Emily and Amira worked hard to move the ball up the field and a defence of Lily and Grace provided a solid rearguard.
Up front it was all about persistence and a number of scores came from rebounds from excellent blocks by Athy defenders. The Athy goalkeeper was kept very busy with Emily, Mia, Isabella, Amira and Tosha all showing off the skills they've been honing at the practice field.
Teamwork and versatility were the key and everyone played in multiple positions and played for each other throughout.
A soaked Unit of Sash girls in Green took the victory in game 2 and huge congratulations to Amira, Emily, Grace, Isabella, Lily, Mia, Seona and Tosha for excellent performances all around.
